If you have ever been to Hot Springs, Arkansas, chances are you have been to Maxwell Blade's Theatre of Magic. After almost 30 years, the #1 magic show featuring Maxwell Blade may be about to do his final disappearance act for good.

Social Media Rumors Fuel Speculation on Maxwell Blade's Future in Hot Springs

There have been numerous reports on social media sites and pictures of the front door that has a sign on it that says, "Closed Forever" with the initials MB. Also, AY Magazine is reporting his retirement on their social media.

However, there is nothing posted on his official website or social media pages about the closing. The word going around is that he will be closing at the end of August and retiring, with his final shows taking place on August 23, 30, and 31. So, if it is true, it will be sad to see such a beloved place come to an end.

When I worked in radio in the 1990s in Hot Springs, I not only got to see his magic shows several times, but it was nice to get to know the man behind the magic. Maxwell Blade was a premier entertainer who delighted his guests with Vegas-style illusions and magic, combined with comedy. Maxwell was also a humble family man who created a legacy that captured the imagination of several generations through the years.

Even after I left Hot Springs, I continued to take my family there when on vacation to watch his magic shows. Maxwell was always innovative, even though some of his shows kept the basics, he had some new magic or illusion that would mesmerize the audiences; no show was the same.

From Fort Smith to Hot Springs: A Magical Journey

According to Fun in Arkansas, Maxwell Blade was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, on January 24, 1962. His magical journey began in the 1970s when he used to watch the Mark Wilson television show, where he became fascinated and inspired by his illusions.

Blade was not only a talented self-taught magician, but he also learned to play the piano and the drums at an early age, performing at a local church. After graduating in 1980, he became a member of the rock band Exit Five, which later changed its name to Shark Avenue.

His love for magic never wavered, and in 1989, he embarked on a full-time career as a magician performing shows across the South and Southwest. In 1994, his first major show production was held at the historic King Opera House in Van Buren, Arkansas, which featured music, comedy, magic, and large-scale illusions.

Maxwell Blade's Influence on the Arkansas Magic Scene

Two years later, in 1996, Maxwell Blade and his family made their debut at the historic Malco Theatre in downtown Hot Springs. He stayed at this location until 2008 before moving to a smaller venue, then returned to the Malco in 2016, fully restoring and renovating the historic theatre to its former glory with a bigger stage and state-of-the-art lighting, with a superb sound system.

This theatre became a reflection of who he was as a magician and became a world-class entertainment venue as it stands today. While watching a Maxwell Blade show, not only did you see some amazing tricks and illusions, but guests learned about the history of the Malco Theatre and Hot Springs in general through his magic.

Maxwell Blade's magic show had become synonymous with Hot Springs because you couldn't think of one without the other. It's sad to see such a beloved, iconic magic show come to an end. Maxwell, thank you for the decades of memories you have given families all around the world, sharing a part of your special, magical journey. Now on to the next journey, whatever that is!
