Visit Arkansas’ Old Mill Seen in Opening Scene of ‘Gone With The Wind’

Now that the fall season has arrived, there is nothing like heading outdoors for some fresh air and visiting one of Arkansas's most unique historic buildings, the Old Mill in North Little Rock.

The Old Mill was built in the 1930s to resemble an early 1830s water-powered grist mill, and if you have ever seen the 1939 classic film "Gone With The Wind," chances are you saw it in the opening scene. It's believed to be the last standing structure from the film and remains on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fast forward to today, and not much has changed in a building that has withstood the test of time. As a matter of fact, when you set foot on the Old Mill grounds, it feels like you are stepping back in time.

The Old Mill stands between a tree-lined residential neighborhood surrounded by a small lake. The mill, with its stone and rock structure and fake wood (faux bois), was sculptured by Señor Dionicio Rodriguez.

The free-standing water wheel and the surrounding ponds are stocked with goldfish and turtles, which leads to the man-made, beautiful, tree-like bridges that hover above the lake. Upon entering the mill on the first floor, you will notice the grist mill, which was donated by the Cagle Family and dates back to 1828.

The Old Mill: Great Place to Capture Memorable Moments

Visitors come from far and wide to enjoy a relaxing day at the Old Mill. If you love taking pictures, there are plenty of great areas specially designed for that. The last time I was there, I saw a family having a picnic lunch and enjoying the many park benches throughout the park setting. If you're planning a wedding, the Old Mill makes a picture-perfect backdrop for any special occasion, especially in the spring and fall.
