Otis Williams And The Temptations Here For Mural Dedication Thursday
If you were born and raised around the Texarkana area then you are probably familiar with the rich music history of Texarkana, the giants of country and early rock that performed at the Municipal Auditorium downtown—artists like Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many more. The fact that ragtime composer Scott Joplin is also from here, but did you know that a founding member of the Motown group, The Temptations, Dr. Otis Williams, is from Texarkana too? It's true, and this Thursday, we get to welcome him back to town, along with the rest of the Temptations for the official dedication of Darlene Taylor's latest downtown mural on "Dr. Otis Williams Day," Thursday, January 18, 2024.
The event will take place from 2 - 3 PM Thursday, January 18, at the mural location at the corner of West 3rd and Main St. in downtown Texarkana.
There will be a presentation of an Honorary Citation by both Texarkana Mayors declaring it officially "Dr. Otis Williams Day".
The mural is another amazing creation from artist Darlene Taylor, who is responsible for many murals around our downtown area. Darlene told me The Temptations mural is 22' high by 80' long, took 6 weeks to paint, and she used 32 gallons of paint in the process. As Darlene's legend grows, so does her artistic reach, if you want Darlene to do a mural for you or your town, you better get her booked.

It just so happens that The Temptations mural is right across the street from the very place The Temptations will be playing this Friday night, the Historic Perot Theatre. This is the first time the group has played in Texarkana, and Dr. Williams is the last of the founding members. Tickets are probably sold out by now but it never hurts to try, call the Perot Box Office at 903-792-4992.
The Temptation's concert is in downtown Texarkana on Friday night.
