Sam Hunt Wins Top Country Song at Billboard Awards, Thanks His Wife
Sam Hunt went home with the Top Country Song award after the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 20). His megahit "Body Like a Back Road" beat out fellow nominees Kane Brown, Dustin Lynch, Florida Georgia Line and Brett Young in the ultra-competitive category.
"Thank you," a sharply-dressed Hunt told the crowd as he came up on stage to accept the award, immediately recognizing his "Body Like a Back Road" co-writers Zach Crowell, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne.
Then, he thanked the most important woman in the room, wife of one year Hannah Lee Fowler. "My wife ... thank you for being so selfless this past year," Hunt told her. The cameras caught him giving her a kiss before he went to the stage. "Sacrificing so much for me and our future."
Hunt continued with a nod to all of the musicians in the room at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, saying: "To everyone in this room, man, y'all are shaping the culture of this country. It’s a big responsibility. Billboard Music Awards — thanks for having me and to all of our fans, we thank you and appreciate you."
Hunt joins an impressive list of country music stars crowned as winners at the Billboard Music Awards, including Chris Stapleton, Luke Bryan and Maren Morris. Another winner of the night was show host Kelly Clarkson, who brought out emotions during a tearful tribute to the victims of Friday's (May 18) Santa Fe High School shooting. Before the show, country's Brett Young and Mason Ramsey shined on the red carpet, showing off some cool country style while posing for pictures.
Next up for "Downtown's Dead" singer Hunt is a continued media blitz in promotion of the new single and a stop at Taste of Country's own New York music festival, the Taste of Country Music Festival at Hunter Mountain.
