Edward James Olmos to Head ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Spinoff ‘Mayans MC’
When last we heard, FX was ready to rev up its Mayans MC spinoff of Sons of Anarchy, at least with a pilot order. Now, the new series nets its first major casting, as Battlestar Galactica lead and all-around legend Edward James Olmos takes a leading Mayans MC role.
Per TVLine, Olmos will play the “Reyes family’s once-strong patriarch Felipe, who, after years of being crushed by bullets and hard labor, struggles to keep his past buried and lead his sons down a lawful, righteous path.” The series itself centers around his son EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter.
So reads the first Mayans MC synopsis:
Mayans MC is set in a post Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel, and his need for respect from the women he loves.
Sutter co-wrote the new project with producing partner Elgin James, and will return to direct the pilot as an executive producer. Production will commence in March, on what FX previously described as a “dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens.” The present day setting could allow for occasional crossover with surviving Sons of Anarchy characters, while Emilio Rivera is rumored to reprise his former role as Mayans president Marcus Álvarez.
More casting will arrive in the coming weeks, but should Mayans MC resurrect the Sons of Anarchy franchise at all?
