Texarkana Arkansas Mayor N. Wayne Smith called for a special meeting Monday before the city Board of Directors meeting to announce that he will not seek re-election to the office of Mayor.

There was speculation that Smith was calling the meeting to announce his resignation, however his announcement was that he would not seek re-election and would be taking a job with New Haven Golf Club.

Smith held a press conference earlier in the year to announce he was running for Miller County Tax Collectors office, but then dropped out citing his reason as too many people in the community were wanting him to stay on as Mayor and run for reelection. In May it was reported that Smith was removed from his position as Chairman of the Texarkana Arkansas A&P Commission. That and all of the turmoil surrounding his relationship with the city manager and employees... To say there has been a very stressful environment in City Hall lately would be an understatement.

Recently, Former State Representative David Haak announced that he would be running for the office of Mayor in Texarkana Arkansas. The deadline to register to run for office is August 15 and the elections will be held in November.
