Historic Washington State Park announces the annual summer concert series “Music in the Park” with the theme “Sounds of Quartets.” A free concert will be held on the third Saturday of June, July, and August beginning at 7:30PM.

Quartets have been a way musicians of various genres have organized their bands throughout history. This year, everyone is invited to come and listen to unique quartets and their music from classical to gospel.

The first performance of the series will be Saturday, June 18, with the Texarkana String Quartet. The quartet has been playing together for more than a year. The group is comprised of three students and an instructor. Joshua Bennett, the cellist, is a soon to be senior in high school. His brother, Daniel Bennett, plays viola in the quartet and will be a seventh grader this next school year. First Violin is played by Katherine Stoeckl, who is an upcoming junior at Texas High.

All three students are members of the Texarkana Youth Symphony Orchestra lead under the direction of Steve Bennett.

The second violin is played by Lisa Petersburg who volunteers with the TYSO and teaches strings at Trice Elementary Magnet School in Texarkana, Ark. The quartet will include several pieces that would have been heard around Washington in the 19th Century.

The next performance will include a sister quartet called “Real Entertaining” on Saturday, July 16, and a local gospel quartet called “Measure of Grace” on Saturday, August 20.

Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to spread on the grounds of the 1874 courthouse by 7:30PM on concert dates. The gift shop will be open for refreshments and Williams’ Tavern Restaurant will be open from 11AM – 7PM.
