Texas A&M University–Texarkana has hired Joshua Eargle as the inaugural head coach of its new football program, marking a major step as the university prepares for its first season in fall 2027.

Eargle will begin building the program immediately, including recruiting efforts, as A&M–Texarkana transitions from the NAIA to NCAA Division II athletics.

University President Dr. Ross Alexander said Eargle’s wide-ranging coaching background and deep ties to East Texas made him the right choice to launch the program. Athletic Director Ryan Wall added that Eargle’s experience on offense, defense, and special teams will be critical as the program takes shape.

Experienced Leader With East Texas Ties

Eargle brings more than 20 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels. Most recently, he served as tight ends coach and offensive run game coordinator at the University of Texas at El Paso. Before that, he held coaching roles at Florida International, Memphis, Kansas, Austin Peay, and LSU, among others.

He also has head coaching experience in the region, leading East Texas Baptist University from 2013 to 2015 and guiding the program to an American Southwest Conference championship. Eargle was named ASC Coach of the Year in 2015.
