The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is reminding drivers across the state to stay alert during heavy rain and flooding events by following one simple rule: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

Flash flooding can happen quickly in Texas, causing water to rise over roads, highways, and low-water crossings in a matter of minutes. TxDOT officials say most flood-related deaths in Texas involve vehicles, often when drivers attempt to cross flooded roadways.

Even shallow water can become dangerous. According to TxDOT, just six inches of fast-moving water can cause drivers to lose control of a vehicle, including larger trucks and SUVs. Floodwaters may also hide washed-out pavement, debris, or downed power lines.

Safety Tips for Drivers During Flooding

TxDOT encourages Texans to slow down and stay aware of changing road conditions during severe weather. Safety recommendations include:

  • Check current road conditions before traveling at DriveTexas.org
  • Never drive through standing or moving water
  • Find an alternate route away from flooded areas
  • Reduce speed and avoid using cruise control in wet conditions
  • Use extra caution at night when flood dangers are harder to see
  • Watch for stranded vehicles in flooded outside lanes
  • If your vehicle stalls in rising water, leave it and move to higher ground if it is safe to do so
  • Obey all road closures and barricades
  • Flooded Roadway Violations Can Lead to Fines

Texas law requires motorists to obey barricades blocking flooded roads and low-water crossings. Drivers who ignore warning barriers could face fines up to $2,000 and as much as 180 days in jail.

Officials also warn that removing or tampering with flood warning signs or barricades can result in fines of up to $1,000 and up to two years in jail.

Drive Like a Texan

The reminder is part of TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign and the statewide “Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe.” initiative, which encourages motorists to make responsible choices behind the wheel to help keep Texas roads safe for everyone.
