The Best States to Pursue the American Dream – How Did the Ark-La-Tex Do?
Are you looking for the picturesque white picket fence? Obtaining it may be a result of where you live.
The American Dream can mean different things to different people. For some it's obtaining that job you've fantasized about to provide for you and your family or opening your own restaurant that's all your own. For others it's just a matter of owning a home.
It's no surprise that home ownership is more attainable in some state over others.
Recently MarketWatch took a look at home ownership trends among millennials. What they found, looking at the real estate site Zillow, is that 65% of millennials believe that owning a home is a major slice of the American Dream pie. Despite home ownership number hitting record lows for those between 18 and 35 (only 35% of young adults own a home), the dream is still very much alive.
It's a complicated balance of living in the state you want and making enough money to make that purchase.
The results that MarketWatch recently posted were compiled from the percentage of unemployed millennials in each state and the percentage of those who owned a home. In addition, they looked at median home values and median homeowner expenses. Texas and Louisiana fell into the middle of the road. The south, including the Ark-La-Tex, boasts and average of 9-11.9 percent of home owning millennials. That's not the best in the nation like Wyoming or Nebraska, but it's also not the worst in the nation like New York or California.
