As we all get ready for another busy Holiday travel season, we would like to thank Heather Deaton and Emyli Speer for stopping by our studio this morning during the Jim & Lisa Show to get us up to date on the event coming up Thursday when the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) team up to remind drivers to prioritize safety on the road.

This Thursday, December 19, from 10 AM till noon, they will be hosting an event at the Texas Travel Information Center just off I-30 in Texarkana to educate motorists and passengers about the dangers of impaired driving, the importance of wearing seat belts, and the need to stay alert during the busy travel season.

Last year, in December 2023, TxDOT’s Atlanta District reported three fatalities in DUI-related crashes, part of a statewide trend where drunk driving contributed to more than a quarter of all traffic deaths that month. “Drunk driving is a huge problem year-round in Texas, but the problem increases during the holidays,” said Emyli Speer, TxDOT Atlanta District Traffic Safety Specialist. The Atlanta District encompasses Bowie, Camp, Cass, Harrison, Marion, Morris, Panola, Titus, and Upshur counties.

This Thursday's event will feature interactive tools like impairment goggles and hands-on activities to highlight the dangers of drinking and driving. Representatives from the Watch UR BAC program will also demonstrate their DWI simulator to illustrate the effects of alcohol on driving ability.

Safety officials urge all Texans to make responsible choices this holiday season by driving sober, buckling up, and staying vigilant on the road.
