Where the Alligator Gar Can Be Found in Arkansas Waters

The largest freshwater fish in the southeastern and southwestern U.S. is typically found swimming in some of Arkansas's largest rivers, the White, Arkansas, Red, and Ouachita Rivers. Some alligator gar can be found swimming in the backwaters, reservoirs, oxbows, connected to the large rivers in the swampy Delta region.

The population of alligator gar has declined over the years due to habitat loss and overfishing. Since 2008, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has stepped up conservation efforts to manage dwindling populations of alligator gar across the state.

The best time for fishing for alligator gar is in July and August, but keep in mind the AGFC has some strict guidelines on what you can and cannot do. For example, strict catch-and-release rules, trophy tag programs for large specimens, and habitat restoration. Complete rules at the AGFC website.
