
Golden Ticket: Two Arkansas Singers Sweep Early American Idol Auditions
One of America's most popular television shows, American Idol, premiered its new season on ABC on January 26. Heading into the second week of auditions, not one but two Arkansas singers punched their ticket straight to the Hollywood rounds in Nashville this year.
Makiyah Mustiful Receives Golden Ticket on American Idol This Week
According to AY, on Monday, Feb. 2, Makiyah Mustiful, a bank employee who works at Simmons Bank in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, stepped in front of the American Idol judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Idol alumni Carrie Underwood.
Makiyah belted out the song “Love You I Do,” from the movie Dreamgirls, and impressed all three judges with her performance, receiving a standing ovation. Her family joined her on stage as she was given the golden ticket to compete in the Hollywood rounds.
Michael Garner Receives Golden Ticket on American Idol This Week
Before the second week of auditions was up, another native Arkansan joined her,16-year-old Michael Garner from Forrest City. He impressed the judges with the song “I’m Still Fine” by the Red Clay Strays. Carrie was a little hesitant about his age, but in the end, Michael was given the golden ticket for Hollywood week.
Mustiful and Garner are not the only singers who have graced the stage of American Idol through the years. Madison Watkins from Fayetteville made the Top 12 in 2021, and Jacksonville native Kris Allen from season 8 was crowned the winner.

This year on American Idol, there will be a new “Ohana Round” at a Disney Resort, and for the first time, fans will be able to cast their vote via social media.
