I finally had the chance to attend this event for the first time last year, and if possible, I won't miss it again. The 25th Annual Bramlett Beans & Cornbread Community Fundraiser is coming up at the Texarkana Convention Center on Thursday, December 7th, from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM.

Former Texarkana Mayor James Bramlett is once again inviting the community to enjoy a bowl of beans and cornbread for just $5, or a donation of 6 non-perishable food items. All of the proceeds from this annual event benefit area families in need.

This fundraiser began in 1991 by Paula Jeans, in honor of her late father. That first year they collected food for 5 baskets. Fast forward to 1998 when the Texarkana, Texas Parks and Recreation Department introduced the idea for a fundraiser luncheon consisting of beans and cornbread. Texarkana, Texas Mayor at the time, James Bramlett, got behind it and the tradition has carried on and grown.

Who Benefits?

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Christmas Basket program, which allows volunteers to supply food to deserving families in Texarkana. Since the beginning, City and Texarkana Water Utilities employees have played an important role in organizing donations and delivering baskets to local families.

A five-dollar bill will be fine, but if you would rather bring a food donation, that works too. Food donations accepted include canned soups, fruits, and vegetables, plus packaged goods like pasta, oatmeal, cereals, crackers, and peanut butter. Texas High art students will be on hand selling hand-made pottery to benefit the effort as well.
