Most Underrated Lake in Arkansas is One of the Prettiest Lakes
Did you know there are over 2,300 named lakes in Arkansas? Each one has something different to offer but one lake in particular is a bit of a hidden gem which makes it underrated for that fact alone, but it's one of the prettiest lakes in the natural state.
Lake Fort Smith
Arkansas' lakes are known for being some of the cleanest lakes in the United States. Lake Fort Smith in the tiny town of Mountainburg is one of those lakes. No swimming is allowed on the lake but plenty of recreational activities for a fun family outing are abundant.
The 1,400-acre lake is surrounded by the beauty of the Boston Mountain Valley tucked away between the tall trees of Lake Fort Smith State Park. While this may not be the biggest state park in Arkansas at only 240 acres it is considered one of the cleanest lakes. The lake was built in the 1930s and continues to be a water source for residents living in nearby Fort Smith.
Exploring by Kayaking
One of the most popular attractions is kayaking and canoeing, especially during this time of year when the weather is still rather warm and makes for a perfect outdoor adventure.
Lake Fort Smith State Park has 30 campsites, 10 cabin rentals, and picnic areas to take in the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
Mountain bikers will love the 240-mile Ozark Highlands Trail.
There are also several hiking trails near the park and a short easy trail on-site that starts behind the visitor center and connects with the group lodge area.
The visitor center houses a replica pioneer log cabin and covered wagon with exhibits and programs on the area’s early history, according to Arkansas.com.
