This is day 2 (Tuesday) of the aftermath of the winter storm that swept through the Texarkana area. Many schools and businesses remain closed due to ice and snow still on the roadways. Some folks are just getting out to clear their windshields and vehicles from the ice and snow.

Safety: Clear All The Ice From Your Windshield And On Top of Your Vehicle

I spent about an hour defrosting my windshield on Sunday, but the ice was so thick that it took longer than expected. Even with deicer, a scraper, and warm water, some of the ice would not come off. Once I was able to, I used a broom to sweep the ice off the window and the top of the hood.

The key is to defrost your car first, however long it takes to loosen up the ice. You don't want to hit the ice to break it up on the windshield because this could crack the glass.

Keep in mind that if you already have a small crack in your windshield, it's likely that the combination of the heat from the defroster against the ice-cold glass could expand the cracks in the window.

Those ice chunks could fly into your windsheild cracking it, causing you to lose control of your vehicle, and causing damage or even a wreck. This is like someone not securing a load on their truck; it flies off and hits your vehicle, causing you swerve and lose control.

Ice chunks or shards are considered bigger sheets of ice. It would be like someone throwing several bricks at your window at a high rate of speed.

Motorists are urged to keep a safe distance from a semi-truck because they are notorious for having bigger sheets of ice fly off the top of the truck.

Temperatures in Texarkana should start warming up on Wednesday before another cold blast of air comes our way this weekend.
