Almost Time for Over 100 Trumpeter Swans to Return to Arkansas
Did you know that a lake in Heber Springs, Arkansas is the landing spot for more than 100 trumpeter swans yearly from November through February?
If you are an avid birdwatcher then Magness Lake, a U-shaped extension of the Little Red River will be descended upon by the trumpeter flock of birds migrating from the Midwest for the upcoming winter. The birds come to Arkansas to settle down for the winter months and have been doing so since the 1990s.
These beautiful snow-white birds with black bills and an 8-foot wingspan are the largest waterfowl in North America and can weigh up to 35 pounds, according to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Trumpeter swans look similar to Tundra swans so to identify them and their behavior go here.
There are three types of swans in North America, the male is called a cob and the female is a pen. The best time of day for viewing the trumpeter swans is during the midday or late afternoon as they are flying around looking for places to feed, according to Arkansas.com.
