Arkansas – Grab A Quarter And Put It Your Freezer Right Now!
Remember when you could call somebody with a quarter? For those of you too young to remember that, there used to be a thing called payphones, they were everywhere and you could make a phone call for just 25 cents, as long as it was local. Heck, I'm old enough to remember when it was a dime. For all those quarters, that seem almost useless these days, they can't buy much, you can't find a payphone anywhere, and the Salvation Army has put away their collection kettles for a while, we have a new assignment. Food safety.
Did You Know...
Did you know you can use a quarter inside a freezer to tell if your power has gone out and you didn't know it?
Imagine this scenario; You go out of town for a few days, and while you are gone, your power goes out at the house. If it stays off for a couple of days the stuff inside of your freezer could go bad. If you come back a few days later the power was restored while you were gone and everything has re-frozen, that could be disastrous to your health.
How Does A Quarter Help?
First, take a small plastic glass and put a little water in the glass, then put it in the freezer.
Second, after the water in the glass freezes, then take a quarter and put it on top of the frozen water in the glass. You see where this is going, right?
Third, take the glass with the frozen water and the quarter on top of the ice and place it in the freezer where you can easily see it when you open the freezer door. If the quarter is no longer on the top of the ice, it means it melted long enough for the quarter to drop to the middle or bottom of the glass.
That, in turn, means your freezer was off too long, and you probably need to throw everything in it, out.
Technical Flag!
Technically, it doesn't have to be a quarter, anything that fits in the cup and has a little weight to it will work. The quarter suggestion is handy though, most of us have a quarter that isn't doing anything right now except losing its value.
Simple, but effective. Now, where's that quarter?
