Looking for a new career to take you into the future? Learn to be a Fiber Optic Technician with a new program starting up this fall at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana.

UAHT is partnering with the Arkansas Fiber Academy. This program will give students a chance to start a rewarding career in the fiber broadband industry. Students will not only have classroom lessons they will also get priceless hands-on field experience. Students will learn the skills needed to install, maintain, and fix fiber broadband for homes and businesses.

Once the program is completed and the student graduates they will be eligible for the Fiber Broadband Association's 3-year OpTIC Path certification.

This program runs for nine weeks with evening classes, and new sessions will begin every twelve weeks. Eligible students can take this course for free with the help of a grant from the Office of Skills Development.

The future is bright for telecommunications technicians with these positions in high demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects jobs for telecommunications to grow for line installers and repairers faster than average over the next ten years.

 

In Arkansas, the average wage for workers in this field is $30.11 per hour. The Arkansas Fiber Academy says that high-speed internet is now a necessity, not a luxury, especially in rural areas. As Arkansas works to bring broadband to every part of the state, more workers are needed to build and maintain the infrastructure.
