Texarkana: Texas High’s Clint Smith Wins NSPA Pioneer Award
A decades-long commitment to student journalism has earned Texas High School educator Clint Smith the highest recognition from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA): the 2025 Pioneer Award.
A Legacy of National Excellence
This prestigious honor is reserved for educators who make "substantial contributions to high school publications and journalism programs outside of their primary employment," such as through mentoring and leadership. Smith has dedicated 19 years to Texas High in Texarkana, where he co-advises the student newspaper, The Tiger Times, and the Tiger yearbook, in addition to teaching digital media and commercial photography.
Celebrating Texarkana's Student Voice and Leadership
Under his guidance, the TISD journalism program has become one of the nation’s most decorated. Student publications consistently earn the coveted NSPA Pacemaker and CSPA Crown awards, showing the lasting influence Smith has had in helping young voices thrive.

“We’re extremely proud of Mr. Smith’s accomplishment,” said Ben Renner, Chief of Secondary Schools and Texas High Principal. “His dedication to journalism and the lasting influence he has on students exemplify the strength and purpose of our district’s commitment to student voice and leadership.”
