Small Town in Arkansas: One of 50 Most Hippie Towns in America
Growing up, I was always fascinated by the hippie lifestyle, a free-spirited way of living that promotes peace and love. I had the blacklight posters, a peace sign belt buckle, a leather headband, a tie-dyed t-shirt, burned a lot of dragon blood incense, listened to a lot of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
The Life of a Hippie
The life of a hippie took on a whole new persona once it hit the college campus in the 1960s and 1970s, with the smell of patchouli, peace signs, and love beads often associated with hippie culture.. However, hippies began to take on a different vibe from the general public when they became known as "stoners" for their indulgence in marijuana and other drugs.
It would become common to see a VW van or bus pull up and see smoke billowing out of the doors from all the weed. Movies like Cheech and Chong's "Up in Smoke" and "Dazed and Confused" glorified the stoner generation and the hippie lifestyle, which was prevalent in California during that era. In today's world, the term hippie is likely to be called a free spirit, bohemian, or even a naturalist. Well, Arkansas is named the Natural State. Hmmm
