Help Keep Historic Texas-Based B-29 ‘FIFI’ Flying
One of America’s last flying B-29 Superfortresses, FIFI, is grounded for the moment, but with your help, she’ll be back in the skies soon.
The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) recently announced that warbird FIFI was forced to delay her 2025 AirPower History Tour due to a critical engine issue discovered during pre-flight checks. Mechanics found a malfunction in a small but essential component of her supercharger system, prompting immediate removal of two of her engines for repair.
The B-29/B-24 Squadron’s maintenance crew quickly crated and shipped the engines to Vintage Radials in California, where expert technicians are rebuilding and testing the systems to original specifications. Each engine will be bench-tested before returning to the aircraft.
FIFI is based at Dallas Executive Airport (RDB) at the Commemorative Air Force HQ, and she is one of only two B-29 bombers still flying today; the other is Doc (below), which flys out of Wichita, Kansas. As you can imagine, keeping FIFI airborne is both a technical and financial challenge. The CAF has launched a fundraising effort to cover the cost of repairs and ensure she can continue her mission of honoring World War II veterans and educating future generations.
Doc is pictured above and below. We can't let Doc be the only one left flying; he might get lonely.
“Every repair is done with deep respect for the aircraft and what she represents,” said Matthew Hood, Maintenance Officer. Squadron Leader Jeremy Lashbrook added, “We can’t do this without the support of people who believe in preserving the legacy of the Greatest Generation.”
To contribute and follow repair updates, visit the website and give whatever you can. With your help, FIFI will fly again.
