Here is Arkansas’ Official State Pie, What about Texas?
If you grew up like I did then the holiday season from Thanksgiving to Christmas could also be called Pie Season. Everyone loves pies, but do you know what the official state pie of Arkansas is? What about Texas?
If you are looking for a pie to bake for Christmas dinner then why not make one of these pies? The Texas State Pie is pretty well known but the real Official Arkansas State Pie? I've never even heard of it.
Well, here we go!
The Official State Pie of Texas is...
Ah, Yes the Pecan Pie. It was named the official state pie by the Texas Legislature in 2013. Why did it become the official state pie? Texas has a lot of Pecan trees, so much so that the Pecan Tree is the official state tree. With all those pecans someone had to get creative and think of something to do with them all.
According to tastingtable.com, the earliest recipe showed up in a St. Louis church cookbook in 1893. But then in Texas, it started showing up in cookbooks in the 1870s so it is obvious why this pie should be the official state pie for Texas.
The Official State Pie of Arkansas is NOT...
If you guessed Possium Pie, you would be wrong. Now, Arkansas Possum Pie is super popular in Arkansas and you might think it got its name so people would stay away from this delicious chocolate custard layer pie with whipped cream. It got the make because it looks like a vanilla pie on the outside but it hides its appearance of a chocolate pie inside. But it is not the Official State Pie of Arkansas.
What is the Official State Pie of Arkansas?
It's called the Cliff House Inn's Company’s Comin’ Pie. What? Okay so here's what we know...
According to onlyinourstate.com
As the story goes, in 1986, in honor of Arkansas’ 150th birthday, Jim Berry, the owner of Cliff House Inn, lobbied for Company’s Comin’ Pie to be the state’s official pie. Berry must've been persuasive because the Arkansas General Assembly granted his wish.
This sounds like a great pie! It's filled with whipped cream, sugar and crushed pineapple. You can see the recipe here. And of course, if you're up in the Ozark Mountains south of Jasper you can have the real one at Cliff House Inn
Have you ever had this pie before? I think it's time to travel to the Ozarks to check this one out!
