If you're into blades, blacksmithing, and history, this is the event for you. A popular celebration of Arkansas history and craftsmanship is returns later this month as the 5th Annual James Black’s Bowie Heritage Festival comes to Historic Washington State Park on April 24 & 25.

The two-day event will run from 9 AM to 5 PM each day and is hosted by the City of Washington in partnership with several regional organizations.

Honoring the Legacy of the Bowie Knife

The festival pays tribute to legendary bladesmith James Black, who is credited with forging the first Bowie Knife for Jim Bowie in Washington.

Visitors will get a firsthand look at 19th-century craftsmanship through live demonstrations, exhibits, and interactive experiences that highlight Arkansas’ rich heritage.

Demonstrations, Guests, and Competitions

This year’s festival features appearances by historian Bill Worthen and weapons expert JW Wiseman, along with bladesmiths from across the country.

One of the main attractions is the James Black Arkansas State Cutting Competition Championship, organized by Jerry Fisk, a nationally recognized master bladesmith.

Festival Activities

  • Live forging challenges
  • Knife shows and artisan vendors
  • Hands-on demonstrations
  • Living history re-enactments
  • Step Into History in Washington

Events will be spread across several historic locations, including the James Black School of Bladesmithing, the 1874 Courthouse, and the town’s Blacksmith Shop.

In addition to all the bladesmithing action, visitors can tour historic buildings, take surrey rides, and enjoy food vendors and family-friendly activities throughout one of Arkansas’ best-preserved historic communities.

A special exhibit featuring authentic James Black knives and antique Bowie knives will also be on display.
