Sam’s Club is Changing Receipt Policy, But is it Really Better?
Sam's Club announced a new policy for members and their shopping experience. They will no longer require you to show them your receipt so they can check to make sure you don't have something in your cart that you didn't pay for. But...there is always a 'but'
Sounds great right? But should we be nervous and apprehensive of the new policy?
If you are a member and shop at Sam's Club, then you know the drill after checking out or shopping with their 'scan and go' on their app you get stuck in the bottlenecked line out the door.
According to a press release on January 9, everything will be easier not because they trust us but because new technology with AI will be used. Yep.
The new AI technology is being tested at 10 Sam's Clubs.
Now, after a member completes payment at a register or via Scan & Go, a combination of computer vision and digital technology deployed in the exit area of the club captures images of carts and verifies payment for all items within a member’s basket. With AI working in the background to continually speed the process, this digital innovation not only streamlines the member’s exit, but also allows exit greeters to refocus their time and expertise to assisting members and ensuring they have an enjoyable shopping experience.
Well, I like the idea of a faster exit but there goes AI watching us again. And taking over an employee's job. Yes, I see that the exit greeters will go into other positions, but...
Maybe I'm just old-fashioned. Were people worried like this when vehicles replaced the horse, electricity replaced candles and other modern conveniences like microwaves, coffee makers, computers and cell phones? I guess I just need to accept and enjoy an easier exit at Sam's Club.
There is no word on when the changes will be made to all their stores but as soon as you don't see an exit greeter you will know it's here.
