Texarkana Homeless Encampment Cleanup Came With a Warning
Texarkana Arkansas Police along with the Arkansas Street Department cleaned up some homeless encampments this week helping relocate several of the folks living there and getting them assistance, but it all came with a warning to not return to these areas.
In response to ongoing complaints of littering, vandalism, and other disturbances from local businesses and residents, the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department (TAPD) recently conducted a coordinated cleanup of homeless encampments in the wooded areas around Garland and E. 50th Streets.
The operation, led by TAPD officers and supported by Street Superintendent Clay Hicks and his team from the City of Texarkana, Arkansas Street Department, aimed to address the concerns while offering assistance to the homeless individuals involved. Over several days, officers provided guidance, alternative options, and resources to those affected, allowing time for them to vacate the area before clearing the site. While no arrests were made, verbal warnings were issued regarding trespassing, littering, and vandalism on private property.
Interim Chief Ed Chattaway commented on the operation, stating that the TAPD goal was not just to enforce the law through arrests. They recognize the challenges faced by the homeless population and wanted to engage with them directly, offering available resources and information. At the same time, police have a duty to protect the rights of business owners and residents. Chief Chattaway said;
"from this point forward, there will be a zero tolerance for any encampment in this area, and any violator will be arrested.”
